Mesut Ozil is settling into life in the Premier League rather quickly, and with a number of assists and a European goal already under his belt he is quickly changing the belief in the Arsenal camp. Hailed as ‘the best bargain in the transfer window’ by Emmanuel Petit, Ozil is inspiring Arsenal to the kind of performances that led them to their unbeaten run of 49 consecutive league games from May 2003 to October 2004, during which the won the Premier League Trophy. Will they finally be able to get their hands on it again in 2014?
Arsenal have already picked up a couple of awards this season, with Aaron Ramsey being awarded ‘Player of the Month’ for September, and Arsene Wenger picking up the respective manager’s award. And whilst there is a long way to go of the 2013/2014 campaign, the way they are playing at the moment makes it hard to ignore them as genuine title contenders.
Losing their first game to Aston Villa 3-1 was not the start Arsenal fans would have hoped for, but since then they find themselves unbeaten and top of the Barclays Premier League. Ozil appears to be a major factor behind this, giving more confidence to the team and fans alike, alongside Ramsey who himself is looking back to his best. Together they are playing some fantastic passing football, producing some great results, especially in the group stages of the Champions League.
However, the only side in the top 6 that they have faced so far is Tottenham, and therefore they still have a lot of work to do and some big games away at the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea, all whist aiming to finish top of a difficult Champions League Group. But whilst these prospects may have worried the Arsenal team a year ago, things are looking rather different this year, and I’m sure they are relishing the challenge of adding to their footballing trophies.
